Gunmen suspected to be cultists have killed four mourners and injured about 15 others during a burial ceremony in Anambra State.

The incident occurred on Thursday night, during a wake keep for an 18 years old boy, at Ezi village in Ogidi, Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State.

The wake keep eas organised ahead of the internment slated for Friday.

A source in the community, who did not wish to be named, said, “Friends of the deceased gathered to honour him with a night wake and were carried away as they entertained themselves with drinks and some were smoking. In was in the process that some people arrived and opened fire on them.

“The suspicion in the community is that the boy who is to be buried was a cultist, and rival members came to attack because they knew his cult members would be at the ceremony and they could only be caught off guard at such event.”

It was gathered that while four people were killed instantly, about 15 others sustained bullet injuries.

The injured were taken to the hospital for medical attention.

The spokesperson of the Anambra State Police Command, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, has confirmed the incident.

He said: “The Command was alerted following a distress call in the late hours of 11th September 2025, that armed men suspected to be cultists invaded a burial ceremony at Ezi Village, Ogidi, Idemili North LGA.

“They opened fire on the attendees, resulting in the death of four persons, while 15 others sustained serious injuries. Police Operatives from Ogidi Division, led by the Divisional Police Officer, swiftly mobilized to the scene, restored normalcy, and immediately evacuated the victims to hospitals for medical attention.

“In the course of the operation, 16 expended cartridges were recovered as exhibits. The Command has since launched a discreet investigation to identify, trace, and arrest the perpetrators, as preliminary findings suggest that the incident is connected to a clash between rival cult groups.

“The State Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, has strongly condemned the incident and assures residents that the Command remains resolute in its commitment to rid the State of cult-related violence and other criminal activities.

“The Command urges members of the public to remain calm, security-conscious, and to continue to provide useful information by reporting suspicious movements or persons to the nearest Police formation.”

Finland ends landline era after nearly 150 years of telephone service

Finland has officially ended an era in telecommunications, switching off its final landline telephone network nearly 150 years after fixed-line services were first introduced.   According to TheCable, citing developments in Finland, telecom operator Elisa ended its landline service on Tuesday with a symbolic final call between the company’s chief executive officer, Topi Manner, and Jarkko Saarimäki, head of Finland’s communications and transport agency. During the call, the two reflected on the role landline telephones once played in everyday life. Manner recalled living in London as a teenager during the 1980s, when he would arrange a weekly call home so his family would be available to answer. The conversation ended with the Finnish farewell “kuulemiin”, meaning “speak later”. Finland’s landline network dates back to the 1880s and became a key part of the country’s communications infrastructure. By the 1960s, Finland ranked seventh in Europe for landline subscriptions, with household connections reaching their highest levels in the early 1990s. The rapid rise of mobile phones, however, led to a steady decline in landline use. Finland, the home of mobile phone pioneer Nokia, became one of the world’s earliest adopters of mobile technology, accelerating the shift to wireless communication. Most major telecom operators began phasing out landline services from 2019, while another provider stopped supporting fixed-line networks earlier this year. Elisa said it had not sold new landline subscriptions for several years because customers had increasingly embraced digital and mobile services. The company said private customers can retain their existing landline numbers by transferring them to mobile-based subscriptions. It also said it would work with business customers to provide suitable replacement communication solutions. The shutdown marks the end of one of the world’s longest-running national landline networks and reflects the continued global transition towards mobile and digital communications.
