Dani Carvajal leaves Real Madrid as club confirms summer exit

Dani Carvajal will leave Real Madrid at the end of the season, ending a decorated spell that saw the veteran defender become one of the club’s most successful players. The Spanish giants confirmed the decision on Monday, saying the 34-year-old will play his final game at Santiago Bernabéu Stadium this weekend when Madrid host Athletic Bilbao in their final home match of the campaign. According to Channels Television, Carvajal departs after making 450 appearances for Madrid and winning 27 trophies, including six UEFA Champions League titles and four La Liga crowns. In a statement, the club described Carvajal as “one of the greatest legends” in its history, while club president Florentino Pérez called him “a symbol of Real Madrid and its academy”. Carvajal came through Madrid’s famed academy system before briefly joining Bayer Leverkusen in 2012. The defender returned to Madrid a year later and became a key figure in one of the club’s most dominant modern eras. His final season has been disrupted by injuries, with Spanish reports suggesting he will miss out on selection for Spain national football team at this summer’s FIFA World Cup. Carvajal’s departure closes a major chapter for Madrid, who are set to finish a second consecutive season without a major trophy.
Retired Nigerian Ports Authority pensioners protest at NPA headquarters in Lagos over delayed pension benefits.

NPA pension protest: Retirees storm Lagos head office over unpaid benefits

Members of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) Pensioners and Welfare Association on Monday staged a protest at the headquarters of the Nigerian Ports Authority in Lagos, demanding the implementation of revised pension benefits under the new pension scheme. According to The Nation, the retirees gathered at the Marina headquarters carrying placards accusing the authority of withholding what they described as 16 years of constitutional pension entitlements. Some banners appealed directly to Bola Tinubu to intervene, while others highlighted the hardship faced by pensioners surviving on as little as ₦30,000 monthly. The demonstrators said pension adjustments were not implemented when the contributory pension scheme was introduced, even as serving employees benefited from salary reviews over the years. President of the association, Charles Binitie, said the group had initially suspended an earlier planned protest after being assured the matter was being addressed. He said the silence from management forced them back to the streets. Binitie accused the agency of neglecting pensioners while revising salaries for active workers over the past 16 years, widening the financial gap between retirees and serving staff. He said many pensioners now struggle to survive amid inflation and rising living costs. Some retirees shared emotional accounts during the protest. A former worker, James Igwe, said he joined the authority in 1977 and still receives ₦30,000 monthly. He claimed many pensioners were now ill, homeless or unable to support their families. Another pensioner, identified as Otaro, said he retired in 2006 during the administration of Olusegun Obasanjo and has struggled financially ever since, sometimes going days without food. The association warned that if their demands are not met by mid-June, protests will expand to other port cities including Warri, Calabar and Port Harcourt.
Shakira leaves court in Barcelona during earlier tax fraud proceedings in Spain.

Spanish court orders €55m refund to Shakira in tax case

A Spanish court has ordered a tax refund of more than €55 million to Shakira, overturning a long-running dispute over whether the Colombian singer was a tax resident in Spain in 2011. According to Channels Television, citing AFP, Spain’s National Audience ruled that tax authorities failed to prove the singer spent the minimum 183 days required in the country that year to be considered a resident for tax purposes. The court said evidence showed she spent only 163 days in Spain in 2011. The ruling means Spain’s tax agency must return all money paid by the artist in relation to that tax year, including around €24 million in personal income tax, almost €25 million in penalties and additional legal interest. The repayment takes the total refund above €55 million. Shakira said she welcomed the judgment, saying the court had corrected the record after years of public scrutiny. She accused authorities of leaking details of the case and damaging her reputation during the investigation. The singer, whose full name is Shakira Isabel Mebarak Ripoll, said the legal battle had affected her health and family. She added that the decision brought an end to a narrative she believed had been used to make an example of her. The case centres on Spanish tax claims linked to the period before she officially moved her tax residence from the Bahamas to Spain. Shakira has consistently maintained that she only established permanent residence in Barcelona at the end of 2014. The 49-year-old previously reached a separate settlement in 2023 over tax allegations covering 2012 to 2014. She agreed to pay nearly €7.8 million to avoid trial in that case. Spanish authorities have pursued several high-profile tax cases in recent years, including against football stars Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. Both were convicted of tax evasion but avoided prison under Spanish law for first-time offenders. Shakira is due to complete her “Women Don’t Cry Anymore” world tour later this year with a concert residency in Madrid starting in September. She recently made headlines after collaborating with Burna Boy on the official anthem for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Nigerian military announces joint air strikes with US forces against ISWAP targets in Borno State.

Over 20 ISWAP fighters killed in Nigeria-US air strikes in Borno

Joint air strikes by Defence Headquarters and United States Africa Command have killed more than 20 Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) fighters in Borno State, according to Channels Television. The military said the coordinated operation targeted terrorist hideouts around Metele after intelligence reports revealed the movement and gathering of insurgents in the area. In a statement issued on Monday, Director of Defence Information Maj. Gen. Samaila Uba said the strikes were part of an intensified campaign to weaken terrorist networks, destroy operational bases and stop fighters from regrouping. He said surveillance operations had detected a fresh convergence of insurgents, prompting what he described as calculated air assaults that neutralised dozens of fighters. According to the statement, the offensive is part of sustained counterterrorism efforts aimed at flushing militants out of their enclaves, disrupting planned attacks and restoring security in affected communities across the North-East. Uba said the Armed Forces would continue operations to defend Nigeria’s territorial integrity and national sovereignty. He added that terrorists threatening citizens and communities would be tracked down and defeated, insisting there would be no safe haven for insurgents anywhere in the country. The operation comes days after Donald Trump and Bola Tinubu confirmed the killing of a senior ISIS commander, Al-Minuki, during another joint mission involving Nigerian and American forces. Trump described the slain commander as one of the world’s most dangerous terrorists, claiming he was regarded as ISIS’ second-in-command globally and had believed Africa would shield him from capture. Channels Television said the latest strikes mark a continued expansion of military cooperation between Nigeria and the US in ongoing efforts to tackle insurgency in the North-East.
