Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed has directed security agencies, particularly the Nigerian Army, to take firm action against those involved in illegal mining, describing the activity as a major driver of insecurity in the state.
Speaking during a courtesy visit by the new General Officer Commanding (GOC) 3 Division and Commander of Operation Enduring Peace, Major General Maxwell Dangana, the governor said no individual should be shielded from prosecution, regardless of status or personal relationship.
“I want you to intensify your intelligence. Don’t spare anybody. Even if my son is involved in illegal mining, deal with him decisively,” the governor said.
According to Channels Television, Mohammed expressed concern over the growing activities of illegal miners and called for improved intelligence gathering and stronger collaboration among neighbouring states to tackle the problem.
He alleged that some influential individuals and stakeholders were involved in illegal mining because of the huge financial gains from the activity, while assuring the military of the Bauchi State Government’s continued support in strengthening security.
The governor also disclosed that the state would invest part of the ₦3 billion security allocation provided by the Federal Government in purchasing operational vehicles.
“We are going to purchase vehicles very soon. The Federal Government has given each state governor three billion naira, and we intend to use it properly for security. We are not going to use it for any other purpose,” he said.
During the visit, Major General Dangana said he was touring formations and units under his command to assess the security situation and review operational strategies.
He appealed for continued state government support, citing poor road infrastructure in parts of Alkaleri Local Government Area as a major challenge affecting troop movements and emergency response.
In response, Governor Mohammed said the road leading to Mansur, one of the state’s troubled communities, had already been awarded for construction. He also urged the Nigerian Army to establish additional formations in strategic locations, including communities around Azare and Tafawa Balewa, to improve security across Bauchi State.
