The United States kicked off their home FIFA World Cup campaign in style with a commanding 4-1 victory over Paraguay in Group D, powered by a brilliant two-goal display from Folarin Balogun.

According to AFP, the Americans delivered an impressive performance before a crowd of 70,492 at SoFi Stadium on Friday, easing concerns that had followed a series of disappointing results in pre-tournament friendlies.

The hosts took control early when Paraguay’s Damian Bobadilla inadvertently turned the ball into his own net after just seven minutes. The early breakthrough set the tone for a relentless attacking display from Mauricio Pochettino’s side.

Balogun, who previously represented England at youth level before switching allegiance to the United States, doubled the lead and later completed his brace as the Americans surged into a 3-0 advantage before half-time.

Substitute Gio Reyna added a late fourth goal to cap an emphatic opening-night victory for the co-hosts.

Speaking after the match, US captain Christian Pulisic praised the team’s energy and intensity.

> “Just a great start from the guys. The guys came out with so much energy, just a great performance and a deserved win.”

Pulisic also urged caution despite the impressive result, noting that the tournament remains a long journey and that the team must remain focused on upcoming matches.

Paraguay managed a consolation goal in the 73rd minute through Brazil-born Mauricio after a rare defensive lapse from the hosts, but it did little to dampen the celebrations.

The occasion was further enhanced by a pre-match performance from Katy Perry, while stars including Tom Cruise, Leonardo DiCaprio and Halle Berry were among the spectators.

The victory puts the United States in a strong position in Group D ahead of upcoming fixtures against Australia and Turkey, while Paraguay will need a response to keep their qualification hopes alive.
