Niger State Governor Umaru Bago has condemned the attack on Gidan-Zana and Kpenya communities in Borgu Local Government Area, ordering security agencies to secure the release of worshippers abducted during Friday prayers.
The state government described the incident as a “grave and unacceptable assault” on the peace and security of Niger State.
According to a statement issued by the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Obed Nuhu, suspected terrorists invaded the communities on Friday, August 21, 2026.
The attackers reportedly stormed Kpenya Mosque during Juma’at prayers and abducted an unspecified number of worshippers, while others escaped into nearby areas.
Governor Bago directed relevant authorities to work with security agencies to rescue the victims and restore normalcy in the affected communities.
“The security and safety of Nigerlites remain a foremost priority of this administration,” the governor said, assuring residents that efforts would continue to prevent criminal elements from threatening peace in the state.
The government disclosed that a joint security operation had been deployed to assess the situation, track the attackers and facilitate the rescue of the abducted persons.
Authorities said details of the operation would remain undisclosed due to the sensitive nature of the mission.
The exact number of people abducted and other details surrounding the attack are still being verified.
Residents were urged to avoid spreading unconfirmed reports, casualty figures or information that could disrupt ongoing security operations.
The Niger State Government also said it was strengthening cooperation with traditional leaders, community representatives and security agencies to improve intelligence gathering and early warning systems in vulnerable areas.
Governor Bago appealed to residents to remain vigilant and provide credible information that could assist security personnel.
The government condemned the targeting of worshippers and places of worship, reaffirming its commitment to combating terrorism, banditry and kidnapping across Niger State.
