Zamfara’s Zurmi Emirate has been thrown into mourning following the death of its traditional ruler, Alhaji Bello Sulaiman.
Sulaiman, the Emir of Zurmi in Zamfara State, died on Monday at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Gusau.
Zamfara Governor Dauda Lawal announced the death in a statement on Tuesday, describing the monarch’s passing as a major loss to the state and the Zurmi Emirate.
Lawal said Sulaiman would be remembered for his service to his people, contributions to the traditional institution and commitment to peace and progress in Zamfara.
“I am deeply saddened by the passing of His Royal Highness, Alhaji Bello Sulaiman, Sarkin Zamfaran Zurmi. His death is a great loss to Zamfara State,” the governor said.
He extended condolences to Sulaiman’s family, the Zurmi Emirate Council and residents of the emirate.
Lawal also prayed for Allah to forgive the late monarch’s shortcomings, reward his good deeds and grant him Aljannah Firdaus.
Emir’s palace attacked in 2024
The death comes about two years after bandits attacked the Emir’s palace in May 2024, killing three officials, according to TheCable, the originating news source.
Sulaiman became Emir of Zurmi after his predecessor, Abubakar Atiku, was deposed in 2022 following allegations of involvement in banditry.
Sulaiman’s death adds to the recent loss of a prominent traditional ruler in Zamfara, with his contributions to the emirate and the state now being remembered by government and residents.
