The Federal Government will introduce 10,000 electric tricycles into Nigeria’s transport system in August 2026, in a move aimed at modernising public mobility and strengthening the country’s logistics network.

The plan was announced by Vice President Kashim Shettima during a courtesy visit from the Transporters for Tinubu/Shettima 2027 group, according to a statement issued by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Communications to the Vice President, Stanley Nkwocha.

Shettima said the electric tricycles will be distributed by the North East Development Commission (NEDC) for deployment across the North-East and other parts of the country. He added that President Bola Tinubu has approved the expansion of the initiative through regional development commissions nationwide.

According to him, the policy forms part of a broader transport reform agenda focused on integrating Nigeria’s logistics system, linking ports, rail, CNG-powered trucks, inland waterways, airports and feeder roads into a unified network to support commerce and economic activity.

He noted that the administration is also advancing the Presidential Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) Initiative, which aims to reduce transport costs and improve efficiency across heavy-duty and commercial transport operations.

Shettima said the vision is to build a seamless logistics chain where goods move efficiently across transport modes without delays or systemic breakdowns, while also improving conditions for transport workers nationwide.

Earlier statements from transport sector representatives indicated growing support for the administration’s reforms, with union leaders expressing confidence in the ongoing changes across road, rail, maritime and aviation sectors.
