Many people are feared dead after a helicopter crashed in Igbokoda, headquarters of Ilaje Local Government Area of Ondo State, on Monday.
The aircraft reportedly crashed in a swampy area within the Igbokoda creek, making access to the scene difficult.
A local source told PUNCH that residents heard a loud sound in the area but could not reach the crash site because of the difficult terrain.
According to the source, some occupants of the helicopter were feared to have died in the crash. Police and military personnel were later said to have arrived at the area to begin rescue operations.
The exact number of casualties had not been confirmed as of the time of filing the report.
Confirming the incident, the Ondo State Police Command said investigations had commenced to establish the circumstances surrounding the crash.
The command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Abayomi Jimoh, said the aircraft crash occurred in the Igbokoda axis of Ilaje Local Government Area on Monday, October 5, 2026.
“The Ondo State Police Command confirms the reported aircraft crash in the Igbokoda axis of Ilaje Local Government Area of Ondo State on Monday, 5th October 2026. Details surrounding the incident are still emerging, as efforts to establish the full circumstances continue,” Jimoh said.
He urged residents of Igbokoda and neighbouring communities to remain calm and avoid circulating unverified information.
The police spokesperson added that the public would be informed as soon as credible information becomes available.
