Yekini Idiaye has emerged as the new Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly following the resignation of Blessing Agbebaku.

The lawmaker representing Akoko Edo Constituency I was elected during Monday’s plenary after Agbebaku’s resignation was formally acknowledged by the House.

According to Channels Television, Sunday Ojiezele, representing Esan South East Constituency, nominated Idiaye for the position. The nomination was seconded by Eric Okaka, representing Owan East Constituency.

The Clerk of the House subsequently administered the oath of office on Idiaye, who immediately assumed leadership of the Assembly.

The sitting was presided over by Deputy Speaker Osamwonye Atu. A brief disagreement reportedly arose over the position of the member representing Owan West Constituency but was quickly brought under control.

The House also considered a letter from the Edo State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) seeking changes to the leadership of the majority caucus.

Ojiezele was nominated as Majority Leader, while Ojie Inegbebor, representing Igueben Constituency, was nominated as Deputy Majority Leader.

The lawmakers further approved a letter from the National Democratic Congress (NDC), nominating Natasha Osawaru as the new Minority Leader.

The nomination of Osawaru had reportedly been pending before the latest leadership changes.

The developments have ushered in a new leadership structure in the Edo State House of Assembly, with Idiaye now presiding over the eighth Assembly.
