Overturned Indonesian ferry floating in rough waters during a search-and-rescue operation in the Java Sea.

Indonesian ferry capsizes in Java sea, six dead, 130 missing

At least six people have died and 130 remain missing after an Indonesian passenger ferry capsized in the Java Sea.   The Virgo Transport 8, carrying 213 passengers and 30 crew members, was travelling from Surabaya in East Java to Banjarmasin in South Kalimantan when it ran into rough seas. The captain reportedly issued a distress call after the 119-metre ferry began listing amid waves reaching about three metres. Contact with the vessel was lost at around 2am on Sunday. Authorities received information roughly two hours later that the ferry had capsized. About 107 people have been rescued, while approximately 280 personnel are involved in the ongoing search-and-rescue operation. Other vessels operating in the Java Sea have also been alerted to look out for survivors. Footage released by Indonesia’s National Search and Rescue Agency showed the overturned ferry floating in choppy waters during a helicopter search operation. The ferry was built in Japan in 1987 and operated there until last year, when it was sold to PT Virgo Karya Shipping, its current Indonesian operator. Indonesia, an archipelago of more than 17,000 islands, relies heavily on ferries for transportation between its islands. The latest incident comes about a month after another Indonesian ferry caught fire in rough seas near Bali. At least 211 people were rescued in that incident, while one person died and four others were reported missing.
