Police have recovered the bodies of nine people along the Wawa-Lumma road in Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State following suspected bandit attacks.

The Niger State Police Command confirmed the recovery on Wednesday, saying the victims were believed to have been killed while travelling along the road.

The command’s spokesperson, SP Wasiu Abiodun, told the News Agency of Nigeria in Minna that police and military personnel were deployed to the area after receiving information about the incident on Tuesday.

He said the security teams evacuated the bodies and intensified clearance operations to secure the area and prevent further security threats.

“Police and military tactical teams were mobilised to the scene; the bodies recovered, while clearance operation was intensified to secure the area,” Abiodun said.

The incident comes days after security agencies rescued 308 people abducted in separate attacks in Kwara and Niger states.

According to the report by the News Agency of Nigeria, 163 of those rescued were abducted from Woro Community in Kaiama Local Government Area of Kwara State, while 145 others were kidnapped in a separate attack in Niger State.

The victims were rescued from the Kainji Lake National Park forest in New Bussa Local Government Area of Niger State during a coordinated intelligence-led operation involving the National Counter-Terrorism Centre, the Armed Forces, the Department of State Services and the Nigeria Police Force.

Authorities have continued security operations in affected areas as efforts intensify to tackle banditry and protect travellers and communities.
