Nigeria’s Samuel Ogazi made history by winning the country’s first-ever Commonwealth Games men’s 400 metres gold medal, while compatriot Ella Onojuvwevwo claimed bronze in the women’s event at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games.

According to Channels Television, the 20-year-old Ogazi stormed to victory in 44.25 seconds at Scotstoun Stadium on Saturday, missing the Commonwealth Games record of 44.24 seconds, set by Grenada’s Kirani James in 2014, by just one hundredth of a second.

Entering the final as the world’s fastest man in 2026, Ogazi battled Trinidad and Tobago’s Jereem Richards through the opening half of the race before producing a powerful finish over the final 150 metres to seal gold. Richards took silver, while South Africa’s Zakithi Nene finished with bronze.

The victory marks a landmark achievement for Nigerian athletics. Before Ogazi’s triumph, the country’s best result in the men’s 400m at the Commonwealth Games was Sunday Bada’s bronze medal in 1994.

Reacting after his win, Ogazi said: “It feels good. I’ve always told myself, ‘Samuel, you have to put Nigeria on the map.'”

He added: “I feel like I am ready for anything right now. I am ready for anybody.”

Shortly afterwards, Ella Onojuvwevwo added another medal to Nigeria’s tally by finishing third in the women’s 400m final in 51.00 seconds.

Jamaica’s Dejaune Oakley won the gold medal, while Sada Williams of Barbados claimed silver.

Onojuvwevwo’s podium finish made her the first Nigerian in nearly 30 years to win a Commonwealth Games medal in the women’s 400m.

She credited the support she received from home for helping her reach the podium.

“I am really happy. I got a lot of support from back home, from my parents, from my coach, from my teammates, and from everybody in Nigeria. They believe in me, and thanks to them for everything,” she said.

The latest athletics medals further boosted Nigeria’s growing tally at the 2026 Commonwealth Games, following recent successes in weightlifting and para-powerlifting.
