Nigeria’s Super Falcons have failed to qualify for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup after losing 2-1 to South Africa in a decisive play-off in Casablanca, Morocco.
The defeat marks a historic setback for Nigerian women’s football, as the Super Falcons will miss the Women’s World Cup for the first time since the tournament began in 1991.
South Africa took control after the break, scoring in the 56th minute before adding a second goal in the 77th minute. Nigeria struggled to create clear-cut opportunities despite having several experienced players on the pitch.
The Falcons were handed a late lifeline when South Africa conceded a penalty in the 92nd minute and had a player sent off for handling the ball.
Jennifer Ucheibe converted the penalty to make it 2-1, but Nigeria could not find an equaliser before the final whistle.
The result ended the Falcons’ hopes of progressing to the intercontinental play-offs, with two places available from the play-offs involving the four teams that lost in the WAFCON quarter-finals.
Ghana had already secured one of the available tickets after defeating Côte d’Ivoire.
The outcome brings an end to Nigeria’s remarkable record of appearing at every edition of the Women’s World Cup since its inception.
