President Bola Tinubu has congratulated Mrs Oyinkansola Badejo-Okusanya, SAN, on her election as the first elected and second female President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), describing her victory as a landmark achievement for the legal profession.
In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President said Badejo-Okusanya’s emergence represents a watershed moment for the Bar and reflects merit, excellence and the growing recognition of women’s contributions to nation-building.
Tinubu said her distinguished career, characterised by integrity, professionalism and dedication to justice, earned her the confidence of legal practitioners across the country.
The President expressed confidence that her leadership would strengthen the legal profession by promoting the rule of law and advancing reforms aimed at improving access to justice for Nigerians.
He urged the NBA President-elect to work with stakeholders to drive judicial reforms, uphold the Constitution and reinforce the legal profession’s role in sustaining democratic governance.
Tinubu also called on Badejo-Okusanya to reconcile with her opponents and unite the association following the election.
“I extend my hearty congratulations to the President-elect of the NBA for her victory. As the first elected female president of the Association of Lawyers in Nigeria, Mrs Badejo-Okusanya has made history,” the President said.
He added that her achievement demonstrates that Nigerian women can attain the highest levels of professional excellence in both the private and public sectors.
The President reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to working with the NBA to deepen democracy, promote justice and build a more prosperous and united Nigeria.
Badejo-Okusanya won the NBA presidential election after securing 12,317 votes, representing 47.18 per cent of the 26,106 ballots cast during the 24-hour electronic voting exercise. Her victory makes her the 33rd President of the NBA and the second woman to lead the association since its establishment in 1933.
Afam Okeke was also elected General Secretary after polling 8,478 votes. The newly elected officials will serve a two-year term from 2026 to 2028.
