Trump says replacing FIFA’s Infantino would be ‘Terrible Mistake’

US President Donald Trump has backed FIFA president Gianni Infantino amid growing pressure on the football governing body’s leader over allegations of a workplace affair and criticism surrounding a failed private investment plan.

Trump said on Monday that replacing Infantino would be a “terrible mistake”, praising the FIFA president for overseeing what he described as the most successful World Cup ever.

“FIFA would be making a terrible mistake if, for any reason, they even considered replacing President Gianni Infantino,” Trump said in a post on Truth Social.

He described Infantino, a Swiss-Italian lawyer, as “fantastic” and said the FIFA president had presided over the “most successful World Cup” by a significant margin.

Trump added that the tournament would not be as successful or profitable if Infantino were removed.

Infantino, who is seeking re-election next March, has faced mounting criticism over his handling of FIFA’s proposed FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE), a commercial subsidiary that was expected to raise up to $4.2 billion based on a $20 billion valuation.

The proposed entity would have been involved in running major competitions including the World Cup and Club World Cup.

The plan triggered a backlash within football, with UEFA reportedly considering a boycott of the World Cup before Infantino withdrew the proposal two weeks ago.

FIFA’s senior leadership subsequently gave Infantino its “full support” and apologised for the controversy, acknowledging that “errors were also made” after details of the proposal were leaked.

FIFA said the proposed scheme could have provided each of its 211 member associations with a one-off payment of $20 million in early 2027, while increasing funding allocations for the 2027-2030 cycle from $8 million to $20 million.

Trump’s support contrasts with criticism from US Soccer, which joined football organisations in Canada, Central America and the Caribbean in expressing concerns about Infantino’s leadership.

However, the Confederation of African Football and South American governing body CONMEBOL have also backed the FIFA president.

Infantino has denied wrongdoing, while FIFA has described the criticism as part of a “concerted and ongoing effort” to undermine the organisation.

The supplementary agreement allows the continued supply of lithium materials from the state government’s mining block to serve as feedstock for the refinery. Abdullahi said the arrangement was expected to create further employment opportunities for young people and women in Nasarawa. He added that the state would receive $2 million immediately upon signing, with additional revenues expected under the agreement. A representative of Diamond New Energy, David Siong, said the company remained committed to expanding its operations in Nasarawa, including local processing of resources, job creation and supporting economic development in host communities.
