Visa: Nigeria, Namibia dialogue on resolving challenges

Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Mr Festus Keyamo has engaged the Namibia’s Ambassador to Nigeria, Humphrey Geiseb on ways of resolving the challenges associated with securing visa into the Southern African country.

Keyamo said removing  obstacles hindering seamless securing of visa by Nigerians into Namibia will facilitate smoother travel and trade relationship between the two countries.

The minister stated this when he  received the Ambassador Geiseb in his office in Abuja.

According to a statement by Keyamo ‘s spokesman, Mr Tunde Moshood , the visit by the Namibia envoy offered opportunities for both countries to examine  the existing Bilateral Air Services Agreement (BASA) between Nigeria and Namibia and potential collaboration to enhance  connectivity between the two nations.

Speaking during the visit ,Ambassador Geiseb highlighted the historical importance of Air Namibia’s operations between the two countries, noting that the national carrier previously connected Lagos to Accra and played a key role in facilitating travel between Namibia and Nigeria. Unfortunately, Air Namibia, Geiseb said  faced financial difficulties and was eventually forced to cease operations following a government bailout.

Geiseb emphasized that currently, it remains challenging to directly connect Windhoek, Namibia’s capital, with Nigeria, with travelers having to transit through Addis Ababa.

He said  while there are occasional flights via TAG Airlines, they are not frequent enough to meet the demand for seamless travel between the two nations.

The Ambassador expressed his country’s desire to partner with Nigerian airlines to restore direct connectivity, citing ongoing discussions with Air Peace.

However, he encouraged  Keyamo to engage with domestic airlines to explore potential collaboration opportunities.

In his response , Keyamo  expressed his support and shared a personal experience regarding the challenges of establishing direct flights in the region.

He referenced the successful Algeria/Lagos/Cameroon flight route, which was initiated after the Algerian Ambassador proposed a direct connection, despite the close proximity between Nigeria and Cameroon.

Keyamo said  one of Nigeria’s fast-rising domestic carriers, Xejet, which currently operates Sierra Leone’s national carrier, Air Sierra Leone, could be a potential partner in this venture.

Ambassador Geiseb assured the Minister that he would engage his counterpart, Namibia’s Minister of Aviation, to arrange a possible visit to further strengthen the aviation cooperation between both countries.

Keyamo  raised the issue of the visa challenges between Nigeria and Namibia, recalling his own recent difficulties obtaining a visa despite holding a diplomatic passport.

He urged the Ambassador to work towards resolving these issues to facilitate smoother travel and to open doors for more trade and investment relations between the two countries.

Both envoys agreed to collaborate on these matters to improve bilateral ties.

This visit marks a significant step in fostering closer aviation and diplomatic relations between Nigeria and Namibia, with both parties committed to exploring new opportunities that will benefit both nations’ aviation sectors and promote greater cooperation.

Benue at 50: Insecurity and Governance concerns cloud celebration

As Benue State marked its 50th anniversary with grand celebrations in Makurdi, concerns over insecurity, governance and development have continued to dominate public discourse.   In a commentary published by TheCable, journalist and public affairs analyst Yemi Itodo argued that the state’s golden jubilee came at a difficult time, with many residents grappling with insecurity, displacement and economic hardship. The anniversary event drew prominent dignitaries, including President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who was represented by Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila, alongside the Ooni of Ife, Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, governors, ministers and traditional rulers. Despite the high-profile attendance, Itodo questioned what tangible achievements were being celebrated under Governor Hyacinth Alia’s administration. He noted the absence of major infrastructure projects, industrial hubs, modern healthcare facilities and agricultural processing centres that could showcase meaningful progress. The article highlighted worsening security concerns across Benue State, where repeated attacks by armed groups have displaced communities and forced many farmers away from their lands. This, Itodo argued, directly undermines the state’s long-standing reputation as Nigeria’s food basket. He also raised concerns over governance and political divisions, pointing to allegations of exclusion of the Idoma community from key government appointments and growing tensions within the ruling All Progressives Congress. These disputes reportedly involve key figures such as George Akume and other party stakeholders. According to the commentary, Benue’s real progress should be measured not by ceremonies or public relations displays, but by improved security, functioning infrastructure, economic growth and inclusive governance. The article concluded that while the anniversary celebrations may have ended, many residents remain focused on pressing challenges, including insecurity, unemployment and displacement. For many citizens, the true celebration of Benue at 50 will only come when peace, development and stability become realities across the state.
