Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has apologised to residents over the continued presence of cattle roaming major roads and streets in Abuja, admitting that the situation remains unresolved despite efforts to improve the nation’s capital.
Speaking during his monthly media briefing in Abuja on Monday, Wike accepted responsibility for the recurring issue, which has long sparked concerns among motorists and residents over safety and traffic disruptions.
“I apologise that up till now there are cows still roaming the streets of Abuja, I take responsibility,” the minister said.
According to a report by Punch Newspapers, Wike reiterated that the Federal Capital Territory Administration is committed to tackling the problem while continuing infrastructure development across the territory.
The minister stressed that development projects are not limited to Abuja city centre but are also being extended to communities in the six Area Councils. He said ongoing projects cover critical sectors including road construction, water supply and housing for public officials.
“Our attention is not only on developing the city centres of Abuja. We are also working in all the Area Councils. We are providing infrastructure everywhere across the FCT,” Wike stated.
He also announced a month-long programme of project inaugurations to commemorate the third anniversary of the administration of Bola Tinubu.
“To celebrate Mr President’s three years in office, the FCTA will commission projects for the next 31 days commencing June 8, 2026,” he said.
Wike maintained that ongoing road projects across the FCT have improved access to several communities and enhanced security in previously underserved areas.
The issue of roaming cattle has remained a recurring challenge in Abuja for years, with residents frequently raising concerns over livestock movement on major highways and urban roads.
The minister also insisted that Abuja residents can already feel the impact of policies and development projects being implemented under the Tinubu administration.
