China approves RMB200m grant for Nigeria’s economic development

China has approved a RMB200 million grant to support Nigeria’s economic development and the implementation of projects agreed upon by both governments.

 

Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria, Yu Dunhai, disclosed this on Wednesday during a meeting with the Permanent Secretary of Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Dunoma Ahmed.

Yu said the grant forms part of China’s continued support for Nigeria’s national development and economic growth.

He noted that China-Nigeria relations have remained at the forefront of China-Africa ties since the two countries established diplomatic relations 55 years ago.

According to the ambassador, the China-Nigeria Comprehensive Strategic Partnership has entered a new phase of high-quality development under the strategic guidance of Chinese President Xi Jinping and Nigerian President Bola Tinubu.

Yu said both countries had maintained close communication and coordination while working to implement agreements reached by their leaders, as well as the outcomes of the 2024 Forum on China-Africa Cooperation Beijing Summit.

He added that China and Nigeria would continue working to ensure that the benefits of their cooperation reach citizens in both countries.

Responding, Ahmed thanked the Chinese government for its continued support for Nigeria’s economic and social development.

He described the grant as evidence of China’s commitment to Nigeria and a reflection of the strong relationship between the two countries.

The Permanent Secretary assured that Nigeria would make effective use of the grant and work with China to implement agreements reached by both governments.

He added that Nigeria would continue strengthening its relationship with China to ensure the partnership delivers greater benefits to the people.

The 2026 Independence Anniversary is being celebrated under the theme, “From Reforms to Stability: Consolidating Nigeria’s Renewed Hope for Shared Prosperity.” According to the Federal Government, the theme reflects its focus on consolidating ongoing reforms and translating their gains into greater opportunities and improved living conditions for Nigerians. The government also reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening national security, improving public safety and creating an environment where citizens can live and work with confidence. Tinubu to Address Nigerians President Bola Tinubu is expected to deliver a nationwide broadcast on Thursday as part of activities marking the 66th Independence Anniversary. The President returned to Lagos on Tuesday after concluding his working vacation in Europe and is expected to spend the Independence celebrations in the state. He is also expected to attend the premiere of a documentary on the late businessman and politician, Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola, at the Wole Soyinka National Theatre in Lagos. According to the Presidency, Tinubu is further expected to hold political meetings in Lagos as preparations for the 2027 general elections continue. Nigeria at 66 Nigeria gained independence from British colonial rule on October 1, 1960, with Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa becoming the country’s first Prime Minister. The country became a republic in 1963, with Nnamdi Azikiwe serving as its first President. Nigeria later experienced periods of military rule and the Civil War before returning to constitutional democracy in 1999. The 2026 anniversary marks 66 years since independence and 27 years of uninterrupted constitutional democracy.
