Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has picked former Director-General of the Department of State Services, Lawal Daura, as his running mate for the 2027 presidential election under the Allied People’s Movement.
Makinde made the announcement on Thursday at the APM’s national elective convention held at Rilwanu Adamu Square, Government House, Bauchi.
Daura replaces Ibrahim Bala, who had earlier been announced as Makinde’s running mate but was described as a placeholder.
The former DSS director-general recently joined the APM after leaving the African Democratic Congress, where he had sought the Katsina governorship ticket. Makinde said Daura was selected because of the need to address Nigeria’s security challenges.
The governor also used the convention to call on opposition parties to work together ahead of the 2027 general election, arguing that Nigeria needed a credible alternative to the ruling government.
Makinde said the 2027 election should focus on measurable improvements in Nigerians’ lives rather than political promises and government announcements.
He identified poverty reduction, job creation, education, healthcare and security as key issues that should dominate the election campaign.
According to him, Nigerians should judge economic policies by their purchasing power, employment policies by the availability of productive jobs, and security policies by whether citizens can travel, farm, work and sleep without fear.
Makinde also called for restructuring of the Nigerian federation to devolve more powers, resources and decision-making to states and local governments.
At the convention, Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed was inaugurated as the APM’s national leader. He expressed confidence in the Makinde-Daura ticket and described Makinde as the best presidential candidate for Nigeria.
Yusuf Dantalle was re-elected as the party’s national chairman. He urged Nigerians across the country’s six geopolitical zones and different ethnic and religious groups to support the APM’s bid to build a stronger and more prosperous Nigeria.
The party said it intends to present itself as a formidable opposition movement ahead of the 2027 general election.
