The Academic Staff Union of Universities, Plateau State University chapter, has declared an indefinite strike over six unresolved demands, shutting down academic activities at the institution.
The ASUU-PLASU Congress reached the decision at a meeting on August 25, 2026, after the expiration of a 14-day ultimatum issued to the university management on August 11.
According to a statement signed by the branch chairperson, Vincent Choji, and secretary, Lomka Iliya, the union said the university administration’s response to its demands did not satisfactorily address the issues raised.
ASUU said its demands include the commencement of the Contributory Pension Scheme, full implementation of the 2025 Federal Government-ASUU agreement and payment of outstanding arrears from January 2026.
The union is also seeking the provision of safe and secure staff quarters and the construction of trenches around the university’s perimeter fence.
ASUU-PLASU further demanded an end to what it described as intimidation of union leaders and the payment of 22 months’ arrears relating to the 25 per cent and 35 per cent wage awards.
Following the failure to resolve the issues, the branch said its Congress, with the approval of ASUU’s National Executive Council, had approved total and indefinite industrial action.
The union consequently directed all its members to suspend academic activities until further notice and appealed for the understanding and cooperation of staff and other stakeholders.
The development comes amid a series of disputes between ASUU branches and university authorities over the implementation of agreements, outstanding allowances and staff welfare.
Channels Television, the originating news source, reported that the union’s decision followed the expiration of its 14-day ultimatum and the failure of the university management’s response to resolve the outstanding demands.
