Members of the United States House of Representatives have voted for the third time to limit President Donald Trump’s ability to continue military action in Iran without congressional approval.
The lawmakers approved a war powers resolution by 220 votes to 204 on Tuesday, with seven Republicans joining Democrats in backing the measure, according to TheCable.
The latest vote follows similar actions by the House in June and July. The resolutions seek to restrict the president’s authority to continue the conflict without authorisation from Congress.
The Senate’s position remains uncertain. Although senators previously approved a similar war powers resolution, Republican lawmakers reversed their position the following day after Trump criticised them during a closed-door lunch.
The Senate has also yet to act on the House’s July resolution, while the White House challenged the measure passed in June.
The latest House vote comes weeks before the November midterm elections, in which Democrats are seeking to regain control of Congress.
Trump has defended the military action against Iran, arguing that the conflict has degraded the country’s military capabilities. During his campaign for a second term, he had also pledged not to involve the United States in foreign wars.
