Daniel Amokachi, former Super Eagles forward, says Kaduna Governor Uba Sani has fulfilled a 30-year-old promise to members of Nigeria’s 1996 Olympic gold-winning football team.
Amokachi said Sani allocated plots of land to him, Garba Lawal and Emmanuel Babayaro, who were members of the historic squad and are from Kaduna State.
The former striker disclosed this on Tuesday after inspecting the ongoing renovation of the Ahmadu Bello Stadium in Kaduna.
According to Amokachi, members of the 1996 Olympic team received several promises from both the federal and state governments following their historic triumph at the Atlanta Games, but many of those pledges were never fulfilled.
He said Sani’s land allocation was therefore a significant gesture towards recognising the contributions of the former players.
Amokachi also said the governor had directed that streets be named after members of the team who had not previously been immortalised.
“We lack the words to thank the governor for this kind gesture and for his promise to duly reward veteran footballers and coaches in their lifetime,” Amokachi said.
Babayaro, who was also part of the gold-winning team, said he initially doubted that the land allocation was genuine when Lawal sent him the documents.
He said he suspected the players might have been invited to Kaduna for a political event, but that expectation did not materialise.
Babayaro added that Sani had also helped bring Kaduna’s football community together and revive the sport in the state.
Nigeria’s 1996 Olympic football team made history in Atlanta by becoming the first African men’s football team to win Olympic gold, defeating Argentina 3-2 in the final.
