The Federal Government has rejected claims that Nigeria or the Economic Community of West African States backed the failed coup attempt in the Niger Republic.
Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Sola Enikanolaiye, described the claims circulating on social media as false, mischievous and intended to mislead the public.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the minister said Nigeria “categorically rejects” suggestions that it endorsed or supported the attempted military takeover.
Enikanolaiye said Nigeria remained committed to constitutional order, democracy and stability in West Africa and would not support an unconstitutional change of government in any country.
He referred to an earlier statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on August 30, which expressed concern over the situation in Niger and called for a peaceful, inclusive and participatory return to stability and constitutional order.
The minister said Nigeria’s position was consistent with its long-standing foreign policy, stressing that the use of force to resolve political differences was unacceptable.
While acknowledging Nigeria’s membership of ECOWAS, Enikanolaiye said it was false to suggest that the country endorsed or condoned a military coup in Niger.
He urged Nigerians at home and abroad to disregard videos and narratives circulating online that claimed otherwise.
The minister reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to the ECOWAS Protocol on Democracy and Good Governance and the African Union’s position against unconstitutional changes of government.
He added that Nigeria would continue working with ECOWAS, the African Union and the international community to defend democracy, uphold the rule of law and promote peace and stability across the region.
