The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, has bestowed the traditional Yoruba name “Babatunde” on Boston Celtics star Jaylen Brown during a visit to the monarch’s palace in Ile-Ife, Osun State.
Brown, who plays in the National Basketball Association, was received by the Ooni on Monday alongside traditional rulers and palace officials.
According to a statement by the Ooni’s Senior Media Officer, Sodiq Lawal, “Babatunde” means “the father has returned” or “ancestor has returned.”
The monarch described the name as Brown’s ancestral identity, saying it formally connected the NBA star with his Yoruba heritage and ancestral roots.
The Ooni told Brown that he had been officially given Babatunde as his traditional and ancestral name and would henceforth be known as Babatunde Jaylen Brown.
Ogunwusi said the name would bring Brown good fortune and strengthen his connection to Yoruba heritage.
He also highlighted Ile-Ife’s historical and spiritual importance as the centre of Yoruba civilisation and ancestral heritage.
The Ooni said slavery and forced migration had separated families and communities that shared common ancestral origins across Africa and the diaspora.
He encouraged people of African descent, particularly those in the diaspora, to visit Ile-Ife and other locations connected to their ancestry to learn more about their history and cultural roots.
Brown expressed appreciation for the reception and hospitality he received, saying the visit gave him an opportunity to learn more about his heritage and encouraged others to reconnect with their ancestral roots.
