US President Donald Trump has sparked international criticism after sharing a map that appeared to show Canada, Greenland, Iceland, Mexico and the Caribbean as part of the United States.
The map, posted on Trump’s Truth Social platform on Monday, showed the territories covered in the US flag and labelled the entire landmass “United States of America”. Trump did not provide an explanation for the image.
Iceland responded on Tuesday by summoning the US ambassador, saying the map was “wholly inappropriate”.
The post came during a weekend in which Trump published around 100 messages on Truth Social. According to AFP, he posted about 60 messages on Sunday and another 37 within 10 hours on Monday, with some of his posts relying on artificial intelligence.
Trump also shared a cartoon depicting himself playing ice hockey against Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney. In the image, Trump tells Carney, who is lying on the ice, “Get up, governor.”
The latest posts come amid growing tensions between Washington and Ottawa. Canada is currently engaged in a trade dispute with the United States, with retaliatory tariffs on billions of dollars worth of US products taking effect on Tuesday.
Trump has repeatedly said Canada should become the 51st state of the United States, a proposal that Canadian officials have rejected.
The US president also shared an image depicting himself receiving former US President George Washington in the Oval Office.
