The Nigerian Army has approved the redeployment of several senior officers to key operational, command and staff positions as part of efforts to strengthen its leadership structure and improve operational effectiveness.
The redeployments were announced on Wednesday, September 9, 2026, in a statement by Appolonia Anele, acting director of army public relations.
According to TheCable, the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, approved the postings to align the Army’s command structure with Nigeria’s evolving security environment.
A major change affects the North-East theatre, where Major General IA Ajose has been moved from the Army Headquarters Department of Army Operations to become Theatre Commander of the Joint Task Force North East, Operation Hadin Kai.
Major General AE Abubakar, who previously headed Operation Hadin Kai, has been redeployed to the Nigerian Army Heritage and Future Centre as Dean of the Faculty of Operational Research.
Other senior appointments include Major General AM Alechenu, who moves from Defence Headquarters Garrison to the Nigerian Army Heritage and Future Centre, while Major General RT Utsaha moves from the Army Headquarters Department of Army Standards and Evaluation to become Commander of the Defence Headquarters Garrison.
Major General AM Umar has been appointed Commandant of the Army War College Nigeria, moving from the Army Headquarters Department of Civil-Military Affairs. Major General UM Alkali takes over Umar’s former position at the Department of Civil-Military Affairs.
Major General GS Muhammed has moved from the Office of the National Security Adviser to the Nigerian Army Finance Corporation as Director General. Major General JE Osifo, previously at the Finance Corporation, has been appointed Chairman of the Military Pension Board.
Major General IE Ekpenyong has also been redeployed to the Defence Headquarters Department of Defence Logistics as Director of Engineering Services.
At the operational level, Brigadier General AA Bello has moved from the 6 Division Garrison/Sector 3, Joint Task Force South-South, Operation Delta Safe, to the Defence Headquarters Department of Defence Operations.
Brigadier General MS Adamu has been appointed commander of the newly established 8 Brigade after moving from the Nigerian Army Women Command, while Brigadier General MS Sule moves from Operation Enduring Peace to become commander of 27 Brigade.
The Army also redeployed Brigadier General I Sule to the 6 Division Garrison as commander and Brigadier General E Azenda to the 2 Division Garrison. Brigadier General AS Bugaje moves from the 2 Division Garrison to the Land Forces Simulation Centre as Director of Administration.
The Army said the postings prioritise critical operational theatres and strategic appointments, with the aim of placing officers with the appropriate leadership, experience and expertise in key positions.
Shaibu charged the newly appointed officers to justify the confidence placed in them through exemplary leadership, operational innovation and professionalism, while remaining committed to defending Nigeria’s sovereignty, protecting its territorial integrity and supporting civil authorities in maintaining peace and security.
