Holders Paris Saint-Germain began their defence of the Champions League in emphatic fashion, thrashing Slovan Bratislava 6-1 on Wednesday as Ferran Torres scored a hat-trick.

The result keeps PSG’s hopes of becoming only the fourth club to win Europe’s premier competition three consecutive times firmly on track.

Ousmane Dembele struck twice inside the opening 22 minutes before Torres added his first shortly after the half-hour mark. The Spain international completed his hat-trick in the 57th minute, while Fabian Ruiz also got on the scoresheet. Suleiman Camara scored Slovan’s consolation.

At Anfield, Liverpool recovered from an early setback to defeat Atletico Madrid 2-1 and make it successive victories following their Premier League win at Ipswich.

Atletico took the lead in the 17th minute when Marcos Llorente dinked the ball over Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson after being played through by Julian Alvarez.

Liverpool levelled five minutes before half-time through Dominik Szoboszlai, who finished after Ronald Araujo’s clever backheeled pass.

Alexis Mac Allister then completed the turnaround five minutes into the second half with a left-footed strike from outside the box.

Odegaard sinks Napoli

Arsenal also opened their European campaign with a victory, beating Napoli 1-0 at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona.

The English champions missed several opportunities before Martin Odegaard finally broke the deadlock with 15 minutes remaining.

Odegaard exchanged passes with Christos Tzolis on the edge of the area before firing into the far corner.

Napoli goalkeeper Alex Meret had earlier produced an excellent save to deny Mikel Merino, while Piero Hincapie missed a close-range opportunity.

Barcelona hit Feyenoord for five

Barcelona also made an impressive start, defeating Feyenoord 5-1 at Camp Nou.

Raphinha opened the scoring in the third minute before summer signing Karim Adeyemi equalised with a long-range strike.

Raphinha restored Barcelona’s lead after the break to take his tally to eight goals for the season. Lamine Yamal then added a free-kick before Gabriel Jesus came off the bench to score his first Barcelona goal.

Sem Steijn scored Feyenoord’s consolation.

Barcelona have now won all five of their matches in all competitions this season, scoring five goals in four of those games.

Elsewhere, Ermedin Demirovic scored a first-half hat-trick as Stuttgart beat Viking 3-1, while Sporting Lisbon defeated Galatasaray 3-1.
