Lionel Messi has been named in Argentina’s squad for a friendly against Benin on October 6, in what is expected to be his final appearance for the national team.
The 39-year-old forward announced his retirement from international football in August, bringing an end to a two-decade career with Argentina that included World Cup glory in 2022 and Copa América titles in 2021 and 2024.
Argentine Football Association president Claudio Tapia said Messi had been invited to receive the farewell he deserves as the country’s captain and national-team symbol.
The match will be played at River Plate’s Estadio Monumental in Buenos Aires. Tapia has also invited Argentina’s 2022 World Cup-winning squad to attend the occasion.
Argentina will play two friendlies before facing Benin. The team takes on Bolivia in Córdoba on September 30 before meeting Burkina Faso in Buenos Aires on October 3.
Messi is expected to make his 208th and final appearance for Argentina against Benin. He is already the country’s all-time leading scorer with 125 goals.
The farewell comes after Argentina’s run at the 2026 World Cup, where the team lost the final to Spain. The squad has also faced FIFA disciplinary sanctions following incidents connected to the tournament.
Channels Television, citing AFP, reported that midfielder Leandro Paredes received a 10-match suspension, while Nahuel Molina was banned for seven matches and Thiago Almada for one.
Argentina’s next home match has also been ordered to take place with the stadium operating at 50 per cent capacity following a FIFA disciplinary ruling.
