Troops of the Nigerian Army’s 18 Brigade have rescued 22 kidnapped victims during an operation in Muchiya village, Rafi Local Government Area of Niger State.
According to PUNCH, the victims were rescued on September 15 after troops from the 18 Brigade Garrison, working with personnel of the 45 Battalion, launched a fighting patrol following credible intelligence about the convergence of terrorists in the area.
The terrorists reportedly fled into the surrounding forest after sighting the advancing troops.
The Acting Assistant Director, Army Public Relations, 18 Brigade, Captain Adebayo Adewumi, said troops pursued the fleeing terrorists along their escape routes and subsequently rescued the 22 victims.
The operation also led to the recovery of three motorcycles and other items abandoned by the fleeing terrorists.
The Army said all the rescued victims were handed over to the leadership of the Muchiya community and reunited with their families.
One of the victims, identified as Alhaji Hassan, sustained an injury while in captivity. He was evacuated to a clinic and is responding to treatment.
The Commander of the 18 Brigade commended the troops for their resilience and urged them to maintain the momentum of operations in the area.
He also reassured residents of Muchiya and neighbouring communities of the brigade’s commitment to protecting lives and property, while urging them to provide timely and credible information about criminal activities.
