Pope Leo XIV has announced plans to undergo surgery in the coming days to remove a lung nodule detected during recent medical examinations.
The 71-year-old pontiff disclosed the development on Sunday during his weekly Angelus address at St Peter’s Square in the Vatican, assuring the public that the nodule was discovered at a very early stage and was highly localised.
“During recent medical checks, a nodule on my lung was found. It has been detected at a very early stage and is very localised,” the Pope said.
He explained that his doctors had recommended surgery and that he had decided to follow their advice.
“The doctors believe it would be right to intervene and so, following their advice, I have decided to have the operation to remove it. The operation is already planned in the coming days,” he added.
According to the Vatican press office, the pontiff is expected to require approximately one week to recover from the procedure.
The announcement comes as the Pope continues his leadership of the Catholic Church, which has approximately 1.4 billion members worldwide.
Born in Chicago, Leo XIV became the first American pope when he was elected on May 8, 2025, following the death of his predecessor, Pope Francis, on April 21, 2025, aged 88.
Before his election, Leo was known as Robert Francis Prevost.
Since assuming the papacy, he has gradually established his leadership style while addressing major global issues, including armed conflicts and the growing influence of artificial intelligence.
The pontiff has also emerged as a vocal critic of the war involving the United States, Israel and Iran, which began in February 2026.
He condemned US President Donald Trump’s threat to destroy Iran as “truly unacceptable” and urged Americans to call on their lawmakers to work towards peace.
Trump subsequently criticised the Pope, describing him as weak on crime and terrible on foreign policy.
In response, Leo XIV defended his position, saying he had a moral duty to speak out.
The Vatican has not provided further details about the planned procedure beyond confirming the expected recovery period.
