A Catholic priest has died after a large wooden cross fell on him while he was celebrating Mass at a church in Guayaquil, Ecuador.
The priest, identified as Father Patricio Sánchez Molinari, was at the altar of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church on Saturday when the cross hanging behind him reportedly detached from the wall and struck him on the head.
The incident was captured during a Mass livestreamed on social media, according to the Associated Press (AP) and Ecuadorian newspaper El Universo, which reported the incident on Sunday.
Footage of the service reportedly showed the heavy crucifix falling from above the altar and hitting Sánchez Molinari as he celebrated Mass. Worshippers were heard calling for help as the broadcast continued.
According to El Universo, the cross fell while the priest was praying. Congregants reportedly rushed to assist him and called for an ambulance.
The Archdiocese of Guayaquil confirmed his death and identified him as a member of the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer, a Roman Catholic religious order also known as the Redemptorists.
Founded in 1732, the congregation has a presence in 80 countries, according to the Associated Press.
The Archdiocese expressed solidarity with the Redemptorist community and offered condolences to the priest’s family and friends.
Sánchez Molinari had previously served for several years at San Lorenzo de Vinces parish, which also mourned his death, El Universo reported.
The circumstances surrounding the collapse of the cross had not been officially established at the time of publication. The Associated Press reported that local authorities had yet to comment on the incident.
