Colombia bombing injures 11 days before Presidential Inauguration

At least 11 people were injured after a truck loaded with explosives detonated beside a police station in the Colombian city of Cucuta, near the Venezuelan border, just six days before the inauguration of President-elect Abelardo de la Espriella.

According to AFP, as reported by Channels Television, the explosion injured eight police officers and three civilians. Images from the scene showed the truck engulfed in flames, with nearby buildings damaged as emergency responders, security personnel and residents gathered around the blast site.

George Quintero, security secretary for the Norte de Santander department, condemned the attack, describing it as an “atrocious” and “violent act.”

De la Espriella, a right-wing lawyer, is due to be sworn in on August 7 in the southwestern city of Cali, succeeding Gustavo Petro, Colombia’s first left-wing president. The president-elect has pledged to intensify military operations against guerrilla groups and drug trafficking organisations responsible for the country’s worst violence in a decade.

Colombia remains the world’s largest producer of cocaine, and De la Espriella has said he intends to strengthen military cooperation with the United States and Israel as part of his security strategy.

Breaking with tradition, the inauguration will take place in Cali rather than at the Congress building in Bogota. The city has experienced persistent clashes involving guerrilla fighters and criminal groups.

Authorities are preparing one of the largest security operations ever mounted for a Colombian presidential inauguration, with about 11,000 military personnel and police expected to provide protection across land, air and sea.

The president-elect had initially proposed holding the ceremony at a military base in the conflict-affected Cauca department, but outgoing President Gustavo Petro did not approve the request.

The election campaign unfolded amid rising political violence, including bomb attacks, explosive drones and assaults on security forces. In 2025, presidential hopeful and senator Miguel Uribe Turbay was fatally shot during a campaign event in Bogota.

De la Espriella has also repeatedly claimed that there are plots to assassinate him.
