The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has clarified that there was no fire outbreak at Terminal 2 of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos, despite an emergency response that was triggered on Sunday.

In a statement reported by Channels Television, FAAN said preliminary investigations showed that the smoke seen inside the terminal was caused by the discharge of the facility’s FM-200 fire suppression system rather than a fire.

The authority said investigations are ongoing to determine what caused the fire suppression system to activate.

“Preliminary findings indicate that there was no fire at the terminal. The smoke observed within the affected area resulted from the discharge of the terminal’s FM-200 fire suppression system. The reason for the activation of the fire suppression system is currently being investigated,” FAAN said.

Earlier on Sunday, FAAN activated emergency procedures and deployed its Aerodrome Rescue and Firefighting Service (ARFFS) to the terminal after reports of smoke emerged.

The authority confirmed that no injuries or casualties were recorded during the incident.

FAAN also announced that normal operations have resumed at Terminal 2, with passenger processing and scheduled flight activities continuing without disruption.

It thanked passengers, airlines and other airport users for their understanding and cooperation while reaffirming its commitment to maintaining safety and security across airport operations.
