The first batch of Nigerians being repatriated from South Africa following recent xenophobic attacks is expected to arrive at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, on Thursday morning.
According to a statement issued on Tuesday by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa, the returnees will be transported on an Air Peace flight scheduled to depart O.R. Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg on Wednesday night.
The aircraft is expected to land in Lagos at about 5:00 a.m. on Thursday.
The repatriation exercise comes amid growing concerns over attacks targeting foreign nationals in parts of South Africa. Nigerian authorities moved to facilitate the voluntary return of affected citizens following reports of the incidents.
The Federal Government had earlier assured Nigerians residing in South Africa of its commitment to protecting their welfare and safety while engaging relevant authorities to address the situation.
The development marks the beginning of a government-backed evacuation effort aimed at assisting Nigerians who wish to return home in the wake of the attacks.
