A former councillor in Plateau State, Daniel Danjuma Chong, popularly known as Hon. Star, has been shot dead after gunmen attacked Torok Village in Rim Community, Riyom Local Government Area.
According to Punch Metro, the attack occurred at about 11:45 pm on Sunday, with residents reporting sustained gunfire that forced many people to flee their homes.
A resident, Cynitha Dung, said the community was thrown into panic as the gunmen opened fire.
She said Chong was found dead after the shooting, while another resident, David Danjuma, sustained gunshot injuries and is receiving medical treatment.
The Berom Youth Moulders Association (BYM) condemned the killing, describing it as another disturbing attack on innocent residents of Riyom Local Government Area.
In a statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Rwang Tengwong, the association expressed condolences to the family of the deceased and wished the injured victim a speedy recovery.
The group called on security agencies and the Plateau State Government to launch an immediate manhunt for those responsible, strengthen security in vulnerable communities and dismantle alleged criminal hideouts in the area. It also renewed its call for a ban on open grazing, arguing that criminal elements had exploited the practice.
Efforts to obtain official confirmation from the spokesperson for the Plateau State Police Command, SP Alfred Alabo, were unsuccessful as of the time the report was filed.
