The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) is a paramilitary agency of the Federal Government of Nigeria under the supervision of the Ministry of Interior.

When purpose is not defined, abuse is inevitable. Over the years, the role of the Corps seemed unclear, hence the low level of productivity. But this is no longer the story under the leadership of the Honourable Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, the agent of reform. Today, the NSCDC has a clearly defined purpose, and Nigerians can now feel its impact.

The agency is saddled with the responsibility of safeguarding critical national assets and infrastructure, protecting lives and property, regulating private guard companies, preventing vandalism of public utilities, disaster response, and supporting internal security operations.

What Has Changed in NSCDC Under This Administration?

1. Promotions and Solving Career Stagnation

Under this leadership, there has been large-scale promotion of NSCDC personnel. In 2023, 21,406 officers were promoted, while in 2024, a further 9,946 promotions were approved.

2. Enhanced Operational Capacity

Acquisition of Equipment: New operational vehicles, motorbikes, and armoured gunboats have been acquired to strengthen patrol, surveillance, and enforcement in combating insecurity on major roads and at mining sites.

Creation of Special Units:

Mining Marshals: This unit targets illegal mining and protects mining sites. So far, it has made 307 arrests, with 215 cases concluded and 133 currently being prosecuted. This success has boosted investor confidence and increased government revenue.

Special Intelligence Corps Unit: This unit gathers and acts on intelligence to prevent crimes, safeguard critical infrastructure, and enhance national security. It has recorded 1,645 arrests, with 906 cases under prosecution, 171 convictions secured, and 218 illegal refineries destroyed.

Safe School Initiative: The NSCDC has intensified efforts to protect schools, students, and teachers from security threats. Special operations and dedicated personnel have been deployed to vulnerable schools in northern and southern states. Currently, over 21,000 schools are covered under this initiative.

Launch of “Power Rangers” and “Agro Rangers”: These units protect farmlands, farmers, and critical infrastructure such as power lines.

Recruitment and Revenue Generation: The Corps has recruited more personnel under this administration. In 2024, the Ministry of Interior (including NSCDC) generated over ₦6 billion, partly due to improved service delivery.

3. Officers’ Welfare

Officers’ welfare has not been neglected. Operational vehicles to enhance mobility have been commissioned, while the foundation for CEDOWA Group of Schools – to support the children of officers – has been laid.

4. Accountability and Discipline

Accountability and discipline have also been strengthened. A total of 37 NSCDC officers were among 118 personnel from paramilitary agencies (NSCDC, Immigration, Fire Service, Correctional Service) sanctioned for misconduct, negligence, and absenteeism. This has helped instil discipline and improve service delivery.

Today, we can boast of a functional NSCDC that is well-equipped to safeguard national infrastructure as well as lives and property.

Finland ends landline era after nearly 150 years of telephone service

Finland has officially ended an era in telecommunications, switching off its final landline telephone network nearly 150 years after fixed-line services were first introduced.   According to TheCable, citing developments in Finland, telecom operator Elisa ended its landline service on Tuesday with a symbolic final call between the company’s chief executive officer, Topi Manner, and Jarkko Saarimäki, head of Finland’s communications and transport agency. During the call, the two reflected on the role landline telephones once played in everyday life. Manner recalled living in London as a teenager during the 1980s, when he would arrange a weekly call home so his family would be available to answer. The conversation ended with the Finnish farewell “kuulemiin”, meaning “speak later”. Finland’s landline network dates back to the 1880s and became a key part of the country’s communications infrastructure. By the 1960s, Finland ranked seventh in Europe for landline subscriptions, with household connections reaching their highest levels in the early 1990s. The rapid rise of mobile phones, however, led to a steady decline in landline use. Finland, the home of mobile phone pioneer Nokia, became one of the world’s earliest adopters of mobile technology, accelerating the shift to wireless communication. Most major telecom operators began phasing out landline services from 2019, while another provider stopped supporting fixed-line networks earlier this year. Elisa said it had not sold new landline subscriptions for several years because customers had increasingly embraced digital and mobile services. The company said private customers can retain their existing landline numbers by transferring them to mobile-based subscriptions. It also said it would work with business customers to provide suitable replacement communication solutions. The shutdown marks the end of one of the world’s longest-running national landline networks and reflects the continued global transition towards mobile and digital communications.
