Chairman of Lagos State Parks and Garages (LASPG), Alhaji Musiliu Akinsanya alias MC Oluomo has announced relief packages to cushion the petrol subsidy removal pain.

The packages, he said, cut across commercial bus drivers and passengers. He said the tickets given to drivers at parks for N800 would be sold for N600, adding that all bookings would have 25 per cent reduction.

For passengers, Akinsanya said routes where transport fare was N500 had been reduced to N300 while those paying N200 for fare would pay N150. He added that commercial motorcycle and tricycle operators would have a 25 per cent reduction in the tickets bought from the union.

He announced a task force that would monitor the implementation of the directives.

Akinsanya warned various parks and garages’ executives to ensure compliance, stating that sanctions would be meted on defaulters. The task force will be led by all members of state executives, parks’ chairmen and selected union leaders.

He said that the agency will do all it could not to inconvenience the masses, hence the timely intervention. Akinsanya said the directive was a follow-up to the announcement of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on bus fare reduction yesterday. On the proposed strike by the Nigeria Labour Congress billed to start today, Akinsaya said his over 50,000 members would not partake in it.

He said: “We, the State Executives and the entire members of Lagos State Parks and Garages met today to review the situation in the country particularly in Lagos following the oil subsidy removal by the Federal Government.

“After much deliberations and review, we discussed the high cost of foods, transport fares and other areas of public interest, in particular the plan by the organised labour union i.e. the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) to call workers out on a strike action.

“After a careful discussion, we concluded that we will not be part of any strike or protest rally being planned to draw the Federal Government’s attention to the issue being debated in the country. All transport family and members will be at work to convey people to their various destinations without problem because Lagos State Government has announced some interventions in the sector.

Soldiers raid UNIOSUN hostels, students allege assault and seizure of phones

Military personnel from the Army Depot in Osogbo have been accused of invading student hostels at the University of Osun (UNIOSUN), allegedly assaulting students and confiscating dozens of mobile phones.   According to TheCable, the incident occurred on Monday night and affected several off-campus hostels near the university. Speaking during a visit to the affected hostels on Tuesday, Vice-Chancellor Clement Adeboye said the university had formally reported the incident to the management of the Army Depot. “We have reported to the management of the depot. It is sad that the Army Depot, located close to the campus, which we felt would give us security cover, could eventually release men that will subject our students to this kind of harrowing experience,” he said. UNIOSUN spokesperson Ademola Adesoji alleged that more than 20 students had been identified as victims of the operation. He claimed some female students reported being stripped and indecently touched by the soldiers, while several male students were also assaulted. Adesoji said two students were hospitalised following the incident, with one discharged on Tuesday morning. He further alleged that the soldiers seized more than 60 devices, including mobile phones, from the students. “Over 60 gadgets, including phones, were seized from the students. Five of the perpetrators were identified and brought to the campus this morning,” Adesoji told TheCable. “But they were later returned to the military base. The army division said they would be dismissed. “The VC has taken the matter up with the army authority. We can’t confirm the alleged rape yet.” There has been no official response from the Nigerian Army at the time of filing this report.
