The Nigeria Football Federation has appointed former Super Eagles coach Augustine Eguavoen as interim head coach of the Super Falcons ahead of their 2028 Olympic qualifying campaign.
Eguavoen, popularly known as “Cerezo”, will take charge of Nigeria’s second-round qualifiers against Comoros in October while the NFF continues its search for a permanent head coach.
According to Channels Television, Eguavoen will be assisted by Christopher Danjuma, head coach of Nasarawa Amazons. Former Super Eagles goalkeeper trainer Olatunji Baruwa will serve as goalkeeper coach, while former Super Falcons defender and coach Ayisat Yusuf joins the technical team as an assistant coach.
Eguavoen previously led the Super Eagles to a bronze medal at the 2006 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt.
Yusuf brings significant experience with the women’s national teams, having earned 68 international caps and represented Nigeria at four Women’s Africa Cup of Nations tournaments, three FIFA Women’s World Cups and the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
Super Falcons begin Olympic qualifying against Comoros
Nigeria, who received a bye into the second round as one of the three highest-ranked teams in the qualifying competition, will face Comoros over two legs.
Both matches are scheduled for the Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne-Remo on October 9 and October 13, 2026.
Comoros advanced after defeating Sudan 30-0 on aggregate.
The Super Falcons must progress through four rounds of two-legged knockout ties to secure one of Africa’s two qualification places for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.
If Nigeria defeat Comoros, they will face either the Democratic Republic of Congo or Morocco in the third round, scheduled for February 23 to March 6, 2027.
The fourth round is scheduled for October 4 to 12, 2027, while the final qualifying round will take place from November 23 to December 4, 2027.
