OPay has dismissed reports circulating on social media that it plans to shut down its operations in Nigeria, saying its services remain fully operational.
The fintech company gave the clarification at a Live Town Hall held in Lagos on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, following the spread of messages claiming that OPay would stop operating from September 1.
Dotun Adekunle, OPay’s Chief Operating Officer and Chief Technology Officer, said the reports were false and urged customers and merchants to rely on the company’s verified communication channels.
“OPay is here, OPay is operating, and OPay is going nowhere,” Adekunle said.
He added that OPay remained fully operational on September 2 and that there was no decision to suspend its Nigerian operations or place the company on indefinite leave.
According to OPay, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has also acknowledged the circulating information as fake news.
The company said it is taking legal action against individuals allegedly responsible for creating and spreading the false claims.
Akinfolabi Rokosu, OPay’s Chief Legal Counsel, said the Department of State Services (DSS) and the Nigeria Police Force were investigating the matter, with OPay providing evidence to support the investigations.
“This is not about silencing anyone. It is about accountability, customer protection and respect for the rule of law,” Rokosu said.
Industry stakeholders also warned that misinformation about financial institutions could undermine confidence in Nigeria’s digital payments ecosystem.
Olalekan Disu, Financial Secretary of the Association of Licensed Mobile Payment Operators (ALMPO), said false information about a major fintech could weaken trust in digital payments and discourage individuals and businesses from using such services.
Stanley Jacobs, President of FintechNGR, similarly stressed the importance of accurate information in maintaining confidence in the fintech sector.
Beyond its financial services, OPay highlighted its ₦1.2 billion, 10-year scholarship commitment to Nigerian tertiary students.
The programme has supported students at institutions including the University of Ibadan, Ahmadu Bello University, Obafemi Awolowo University and Lagos State University.
At Obafemi Awolowo University, the partnership provides scholarship support over a 10-year period.
OPay said its investments in education, technology and financial inclusion reflect its long-term commitment to Nigeria.
The company urged customers and merchants to continue using its services normally and to verify claims about its operations through official OPay communication channels.
