The immediate past governor of Benue State, Samuel Ortom, on Monday, appealed to all factions in the opposition Peoples Democratic Party to sheate their swords.

In a statement issued by his media aide, Terver Akase and made available to newsmen in Makurdi, Ortom said that in politics there are bound to be differing opinions but stated that all is to deepen democracy.

The former governor said that he had shared a long-standing relationship and mutual respect with his predecessor, Gabriel Suswam.

He said, “Chief Ortom says in politics, differing opinions and positions are inevitable, but the differences often serve to deepen the democratic process and contribute to enriching discourses within political parties.

“He points out that he and Senator Suswam share a long-standing friendship and mutual respect as leaders within the PDP and will always find amicable solutions to whatever political disagreements may arise, by prioritising the greater good of the party and its members.”

The former governor called on all stakeholders to remain committed and focus on the shared objectives and aspirations of the PDP, as they have always done.

He also commended PDP members in the 23 local government areas of the state for their peaceful conduct in the recently concluded ward congresses of the party and expected them to exhibit the same spirit during the forthcoming local government and state congresses.

“Chief Ortom further urges the party members to support the State Caretaker Committee of the party set up by the National Working Committee, to enable it to succeed in its assignment,” the statement read in part.

Fire guts Kano Polytechnic library, destroys books and records

A fire has destroyed the main library at Kano State Polytechnic, raising concerns over the loss of academic materials and the impact on students and staff.   The blaze broke out on Tuesday at the institution’s library complex along Yahaya Gusau Road in Kano, destroying books, equipment and institutional records before emergency efforts brought it under control.   According to The Guardian Nigeria, the incident has sparked concern among students, lecturers and education stakeholders, with fears that the loss of research materials and records could affect teaching and academic work at the school.   The chairman of the National Library Staff Union in Kano State, Nazir Muhammad, described the incident as a major setback for academic development and knowledge preservation. He said the library housed vital resources used by students, lecturers and researchers.   Witnesses said thick smoke spread across the campus during the incident, while staff and residents attempted to salvage materials from the building. Authorities have not yet confirmed the full extent of the damage or the cause of the fire.   The union appealed to the Kano State Government, education agencies and donor groups to support rebuilding efforts. It also called for stronger fire safety measures in public schools, citing repeated fire incidents at the institution in recent years. The Guardian reported that investigations are expected to begin to determine what caused the outbreak.
