Plateau State police have arrested a cleric and two military personnel over an alleged plot to kidnap the wives of two prominent bishops in Jos.
The suspects were arrested on August 7 following intelligence received by the police about an alleged criminal conspiracy and a foiled kidnapping attempt, according to a report by counter-insurgency publication Zagazola Makama, as reported by TheCable.
The suspects were identified as Rev. Hassan Yunisim Mijah, 42, of Tudun Wada, Jos North; Sgt. Ezra Sunday, a Nigerian Air Force personnel; and OS Usman Khalid, a Nigerian Navy personnel.
TheCable reported that the two military personnel were attached to Sector 1 of Operation Enduring Peace (OPEP) in Jos.
According to the report, the suspects allegedly planned to kidnap the wives of Bishop Ephraim Gongden and retired Bishop Benjamin Kwashi, who are reportedly residents of the Rantya area of Jos South Local Government Area.
Police operatives led by the commander of the Vigilance and Criminal Response Unit (VCRU) reportedly launched an operation after receiving the intelligence, leading to the arrest of the three suspects.
Zagazola Makama reported that the suspects confessed during interrogation.
The Plateau State Police Command also reportedly informed Operation Enduring Peace about the arrest of the two military personnel attached to the operation.
The police are continuing their investigation to establish the circumstances surrounding the alleged conspiracy and identify other members of the suspected criminal network.
TheCable said it contacted Alfred Alabo, spokesperson for the Plateau State Police Command, for confirmation. Although Alabo answered the call, he reportedly hung up shortly afterwards. He had not responded to a WhatsApp message seeking confirmation as of press time.
