FCT Minister Nyesom Wike has denied reports that he is lobbying to become the director-general of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential Campaign Council ahead of the forthcoming elections.
Reports had suggested that Wike was among APC chieftains seeking to lead President Bola Tinubu’s campaign organisation.
But in a statement issued on Monday by his Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media, Lere Olayinka, Wike said he does not need an official position in the campaign structure to mobilise support for Tinubu.
According to Wike, he is currently outside Nigeria after spending more than 30 days commissioning projects, flagging off new ones and inspecting ongoing projects in the Federal Capital Territory.
“When I return, our focus will be the continuous delivery of our mandate in line with the President’s Renewed Hope Agenda and to further enhance his electoral fortune in Rivers State and the FCT,” he said.
Wike added that he could contribute to Tinubu’s electoral success without serving as campaign DG or as a member of the Presidential Campaign Council.
“Therefore, I do not need to be the DG or even a member of the Presidential Campaign Council of Mr President’s political party to contribute my quota by ensuring that he wins handsomely in Rivers State and the FCT,” he said.
Wike, a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has maintained a close working relationship with Tinubu since the president appointed him FCT minister in August 2023.
Tinubu has also repeatedly commended Wike’s administration for infrastructure projects in Abuja.
