At least 20 people have been injured and about 50 houses damaged following a gas pipeline explosion in Aleto community, Eleme Local Government Area of Rivers State.
The explosion occurred at about 5pm on Thursday along Old Bori Road after a pipeline belonging to the Nigeria Gas Company reportedly ruptured.
According to a report by TheCable, which cited PUNCH, the incident also affected roadside stalls and a mechanic workshop where several vehicles were parked.
Residents Reported Pipeline Leak
Residents alleged that the pipeline had been leaking for about three weeks before the explosion.
They said community leaders had notified the Nigeria Gas Company about the leak but that adequate steps were not taken to address the problem before the incident.
The victims reportedly included passers-by and traders operating in the area. Several injured people were taken to hospitals for medical treatment.
Daniel Chuma, leader of the Eleme Legislative Council, said he had written to the company about the leak and petitioned relevant authorities before the explosion.
Chuma expressed concern that no concrete action had been taken to prevent the incident.
He also said no representative of the company had visited the scene following the explosion.
Community Moves to Prevent Further Casualties
Following the incident, community members reportedly took steps to secure the affected area and prevent further casualties.
A video circulating on social media showed residents running for safety as the explosion caused panic in the community.
Blessing Agabe, the Rivers State Police spokesperson, was not immediately available to confirm the incident, according to TheCable.
The circumstances surrounding the explosion and the extent of the damage were not independently confirmed in the report.
