The Rivers State Police Command has arrested three suspects over the killing of two police officers during a stop-and-search operation in Aluu, Ikwerre Local Government Area, recovering firearms stolen in the deadly attack.
According to Channels Television, the officers were ambushed on June 29, 2026, while carrying out routine duties within the Aluu Division. One of the officers suffered a severe leg injury that required amputation before later dying from his injuries. The attackers escaped with the officers’ service AK-47 rifles.
Following the incident, Commissioner of Police Olugbenga Adewole Adepoju ordered the immediate deployment of the Command’s operational and intelligence teams to hunt down those responsible and recover the stolen weapons.
The breakthrough came after sustained operations by the Command’s Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU), which arrested three suspected members of the gang.
Police said the operation led to the recovery of three AK-47 rifles and one Scorpion rifle. Investigators have also linked the suspects to other murder cases currently under investigation.
The Command said efforts are continuing to apprehend a fourth gang member who remains on the run.
Commending the operatives, Adepoju described the arrests and recovery of the firearms as a major breakthrough, saying it demonstrated the Command’s resolve to ensure those who attack police officers or engage in violent crime have no hiding place in Rivers State.
He reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to the policing vision of the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, aimed at protecting lives and property, while warning criminals to abandon unlawful activities or face the full weight of the law.
The Commissioner also appealed to residents to continue providing timely and credible information to support the police in tackling crime and improving public safety across the state.
