Hafidh Hassan, husband of Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan, has died while receiving treatment at a hospital in Zanzibar.
Hassan died at 8am local time on Monday at Emilio Mzena Memorial Hospital, according to Vice-President Deogratius Ndejembi, who announced his death. Ndejembi said the president’s husband had been suffering from a heart condition.
The vice-president expressed condolences to the family and said arrangements were underway for Hassan’s burial.
Hafidh became Tanzania’s first gentleman in 2021 after his wife assumed office as the country’s first female president following the death of President John Magufuli.
An agricultural academic, Hafidh largely stayed out of the public spotlight and only occasionally accompanied President Samia at official engagements.
The couple had four children, comprising three sons and a daughter who is a lawmaker in Zanzibar’s House of Representatives.
President Samia is serving her second term after winning last year’s disputed election with more than 97 percent of the vote.
Leaders from across East Africa have expressed condolences following Hafidh’s death.
Kenyan President William Ruto said he received the news with “deep sorrow”, describing Hafidh as a lifelong companion to President Samia, a beloved father to their children and a distinguished Tanzanian.
Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema also expressed solidarity with Tanzania’s first family, while Burundi’s President Évariste Ndayishimiye offered condolences and wished President Samia and her family strength.
