Reno Omokri, Ambassador-designate of Nigeria to Mexico, Honduras, Guatemala and Nicaragua, has challenged former Vice President Atiku Abubakar’s claim that President Bola Tinubu is 90 years old.
Atiku made the claim during a BBC interview published on Friday, saying he had evidence to prove Tinubu’s alleged age in court.
“I have a president who is 90 years old now, and who is sick, and I am healthy, I am strong, so why would I not make my services available to my fellow countrymen?” Atiku said.
When challenged over the claim, Atiku maintained that he had evidence and would present it in court.
Reacting, Omokri shared a photograph purportedly showing Tinubu with journalist and publisher Dele Momodu in London in 1996.
Omokri argued that if Tinubu were 90 in 2026, he would have been 60 when the photograph was taken 30 years ago.
He challenged Momodu to confirm the authenticity, location and date of the photograph.
Omokri said, “This is a photo of Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Dele Momodu taken in London in 1996.”
He added that Momodu could testify to the authenticity of the photograph, while questioning whether Tinubu appeared to be 60 years old in the image.
Tinubu, according to his publicly stated date of birth, was born on March 29, 1952, making him 74 in 2026. The President has previously faced questions over his age and academic records but has maintained his stated personal details.
Omokri also appealed to Momodu, citing the publisher’s previous comments about Tinubu’s support during his exile from the regime of the late military ruler, Sani Abacha.
He said political campaigns ahead of the 2027 election should focus on issues affecting Nigerians rather than disputes over the ages of political opponents.
Meanwhile, Atiku, who emerged as the ADC presidential candidate ahead of the 2027 election, defended his capacity to contest for the presidency.
He said he was “strong”, “healthy” and “agile”, insisting that his experience, competence and patriotism qualified him to seek the presidency.
Atiku also criticised the Federal Government over insecurity, arguing that inadequate manpower and equipment had weakened Nigeria’s security architecture.
He promised that, if elected in 2027, his administration would tackle insurgency and insecurity within its first year.
