Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) have won the European Super Cup, defeating Tottenham 4-3 on penalties at the Bioenergy Stadium in Udine, Italy, on Wednesday night.

PSG, UEFA Champions League (UCL) winners, scored twice in the final minutes- including the equaliser in extra-time- to level 2-2, forcing penalties where the Parisiens prevailed.

It is the first Super Cup triumph for PSG, who added France as the 13th nation to produce a winner in the European season’s curtain raiser.

The encounter is the first-ever competitive match between rusty-looking PSG and Tottenham, Europa League winners.

Mohammed Kudus and Joao Palhinha made their Tottenham debuts, as well as Thomas Franck, their new manager.

Gianluigi Donnarumma, the goalkeeper dropped due to a contract dispute, was replaced by new signing Lucas Chevalier in goal; this was the only change for PSG.

Despite missing a host of players due to injury, an organised Tottenham denied PSG openings despite the French champions holding 80 percent possession.

The Londoners then capitalised on two free-kicks to take a two-goal lead either side of halftime, van de Ven reacting quickest from a rebound to put Spurs ahead on 39 minutes, before Romero made it 2-0 three minutes into the second half.

Tottenham, however, capitulated late in the game as PSG scored two late goals, Kang-In’s arrowed shot reduced the deficit on 85 minutes before Ramos’ header drew the Parisiens level in added time to force penalties.

It was PSG who prevailed in the penalty shootout despite Vitinha missing the first kick, as Chevalier became PSG’s new hero with two saves to send the French contingent into celebrations.

It is the seventh consecutive season that UCL champions have won the Super Cup.
