The University of Jos Alumni Association has called on security agencies to carry out a thorough investigation into the alleged mob killing of one of its graduates, Ibrahim Mbaya, and ensure that those responsible are prosecuted.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the association described the incident as “barbaric, unjustifiable and a gross violation of the right to life”, expressing deep sadness and outrage over Mbaya’s death.

According to the association, Mbaya, a graduate of the University of Jos, was allegedly beaten to death by a mob in circumstances that remain unclear.

“We are deeply saddened and outraged by the gruesome killing of our colleague and brother, Ibrahim Mbaya. No Nigerian deserves to die in such a manner, irrespective of any allegation against them,” the statement said.

The alumni body urged the relevant authorities to fast-track investigations, arrest everyone involved and ensure they face the full weight of the law.

“We demand justice for Ibrahim Mbaya. The rule of law must prevail and not mob action,” the association stated, while also calling on the police to make the outcome of their investigation public.

The group further appealed to governments at all levels to intensify public awareness campaigns against jungle justice and strengthen measures to safeguard lives and property.

It said the incident should serve as a wake-up call for Nigerians to reject mob violence and allow due process to take its course.

The association also sympathised with Mbaya’s family and pledged its support in their pursuit of justice.

As of the time of filing this report, security agencies had not issued an official statement on the incident.
