Ebonyi State Governor Francis Nwifuru has warned opposition parties in the state that they will face a stronger political challenge when the time comes, amid preparations for the 2027 general elections.
Nwifuru issued the warning on Tuesday during the swearing-in of 13 newly elected local government council chairmen and their deputies at the Ecumenical Centre in Abakaliki, the state capital.
The governor was responding to allegations by opposition parties that members and supporters of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) had been harassing and intimidating political critics in the state.
Nwifuru dismissed the allegations but warned the opposition against underestimating the APC’s political strength.
“Political oppositions in the state are alleging harassment and intimidation by the ruling All Progressives Congress,” he said.
“They will see real threat at the right time.”
The governor also charged the newly inaugurated council chairmen to strengthen the APC’s presence at the grassroots ahead of the 2027 general elections.
He specifically urged them to ensure that the opposition does not defeat the APC in their respective local government areas during the elections.
“You must not allow the opposition to win in your respective local government councils during the 2027 general elections,” Nwifuru told the chairmen.
The governor commended the Ebonyi State Independent Electoral Commission (EBSIEC) for what he described as the peaceful conduct of the recent local government elections.
The inauguration followed the council elections in which the APC won all 13 local government areas and 171 wards, according to reports by Channels Television.
The newly sworn-in chairmen are expected to assume responsibility for the state’s 13 local government areas as the APC intensifies its preparations for the 2027 elections.
