African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, has said there will be no Office of the First Lady if he is elected president of Nigeria in 2027.

Sowore made the declaration during an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Thursday, September 17, 2026. He argued that the position of First Lady is not established by the Nigerian Constitution.

According to him, becoming president would not affect his marriage, but his wife would not occupy an official position or office because of his presidency.

“There is no office of First Lady in the Nigerian Constitution. Becoming the president will not abolish my marriage, but I will not have the office of First Lady,” Sowore said.

He added that women would continue to have a voice in his administration but questioned the use of public funds to maintain an office he described as unconstitutional.

“I am just telling you as a matter of policy that there won’t be an office of the first lady under the Sowore presidency,” he said.

A constitutional review report published by ConstitutionNet similarly notes that the role of a president’s spouse should not be given constitutional or legal recognition, describing the role as one traditionally established through convention rather than constitutional provision.

Sowore targets security votes

Sowore also outlined plans to reduce the cost of governance, saying his proposed reforms could save about ₦4 trillion.

He said his administration would tackle corruption and end the practice of providing security votes to state governors.

“We will stop security votes to governors, we will make this happen,” he said, adding that achieving this would require constitutional changes.

He said the funds currently allocated to governors could instead be used to address state wage bills.
